The Learning Support Assistant (LSA) collaborates with the classroom teacher and Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to support students with varying learning needs. The LSA plays a key role in fostering an inclusive learning environment by delivering individualized and small group assistance, aiding in the execution of individualized education plans (IEPs), and encouraging student independence.

Key Responsibilities
Student Support:

  • Deliver individualized or small group assistance to students with learning difficulties or special educational needs (SEN).
  • Aid students in classroom activities, ensuring they remain focused and grasp the material.
    Help students develop social skills and manage their behavior effectively.
    Instructional Assistance:
  • Collaborate with teachers to adapt and modify lessons to address students’ specific needs.
  • Support the implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) to meet each student’s educational requirements.
  • Assist in preparing instructional materials and classroom resources.
    Classroom Management:
  • Aid in managing student behavior using positive reinforcement techniques.
  • Help maintain a safe and encouraging learning environment.
  • Supervise students during breaks, field trips, and other school activities as needed.
    Communication:
  • Foster effective communication with teachers, SENCO, and other staff regarding student progress and concerns.
  • Offer constructive and supportive feedback to students.
  • Communicate with parents, with teacher guidance, to keep them updated on their child’s progress.
    Record Keeping:
  • Help maintain accurate records of student progress and behavior.
  • Document observations and contribute to progress reports.
  • Assist in preparing reports for meetings and parent-teacher conferences.
    Professional Development:
  • Engage in training and development opportunities to enhance skills in supporting students with SEN.
  • Stay updated on best practices in special education and inclusive teaching strategies.
    Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with the teaching team and other LSAs to share strategies and resources.
  • Participate in staff meetings, planning sessions, and professional learning communities.
  • Qualifications:
  • Education: High school diploma required; degree or certification in special education, teaching assistance, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Experience working with children, particularly those with special educational needs (SEN), is highly desirable.
